The British Sureender at Yorktown
The American Revolution was a great big change in the start of a new nation known as today, the United States of America. Back then, and today, America is known as the world of opportunities. Getting to know how all this started will show us Americas great success and how it is today a successful nation and still the land of opportunity.
The French united with Americans in February 6, 1778. Both groups, American and French signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce along with the Treaty of Alliance in order to formally ally the two nations. The treat of Amity and Commerce allowed France and the future nation to trade with one another. As an alliance they had secretly helped the US until their independence. With the French help, they aided American colonies because of the land they had lost from the British during French and Indian war. Not only did the French provide protection, but also provided armor and loans for the war. In 1777 the British are beat by the French and the Americans proved they were surely worthy of an alliance. As part of helping, the French sent around 12,000 soldiers and 32,000 sailors are sent from the French to the British for battle.
General Cornwallis, the British General, had already taken over Charleston, Richmond, and heading towards Chesapeake Bay. He was supposed to receive back up from the British navy but when the Americans and French surrounded his men, due to being outnumbered, Cornwallis's hope collapses. Forced to surrender at battle of Yorktown because he was surrounded by opposing troops, the Americans and French. French and American bombarded British troops for eleven days until the white flag was sent from General Cornwallis surrendered October 19, 1781. He also signed British surrender named Articles of Capitulation, Cornwallis was not able to attend the meeting to announce his loss, instead General Charlie O'Hara is sent to attend the negotiation.
In May 1781, the French General, Comte de Rochambeau, and American general, George Washington meet to plan an attack Virginia which was planned in August 22. From September 5-9 the French attack British at Chesapeake Bay; as a result, the British return to New York. After 11 days of bombing and having been outnumbered, the British general Lord Cornwallis sends the white flag as a sign of surrender and about 8,000 troops surrender as well at Yorktown. As a formal way to end the war, the Treaty of Paris of 1783 is introduced. Although the British tried to surrender to French but were forced again to surrender to the American troops and General Washington.
After the surrender of the British the Treaty of Paris is formed which set new borders for the new nation and American independence. The new document was first introduced in 1783 in which also formally ended the American Revolutionary war. The Treaty of Paris was also named after the place where it was discussed and where it was signed. The treaty was signed by four people, the British representative, David Hartley and the new Americans, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay.
All American history is important, but what started it all was the Revolutionary War. If it was not for Battle at Yorktown with the victory of the Americans; life would most likely not as it is today. In total, the revolutionary war lasted from April 19, 1775 to October 1781.
